WAVS CONCERT WITH EL AND PATAPAA GETS ONE SEVERELY INJURED AT TAKORADI

As promised by Sleeky Promotions, EL (2016 VGMA artist of the year) and Patapaa (One corner hit maker) were in Takoradi yesterday for the Wavs Concert at the Vienna City Beach.

Despite the fact that EL holds the bragging right as the best musician in Ghana, Patapaa arguably the most popular artist currently in Ghana, and alongside performances from famous Takoradi-based artists like Qwesi Flex (2017 RWMA new artist of the year), Starboy Ratty, Yaw Lucas and Ras Ebo, the show sold at a cheap Ten Ghana Cedis.

How Sleeky Promotions managed to gather these artists on the same stage at such a cool price is in itself a testimony that the guy knows what time it is.

As usual I will share my opinion on the show by looking at the ups and downs and add some recommendations to help improve future shows in the oil city.

High Moments:

Sound: Idea sounds were in charge of sounds at the event and the engineer knew his job. There were speakers at all vantage points; the gate (to entice outsiders), on stage (for the DJ and artist) and giant speakers for the audience. It was DJ Champagne of Radio 360 who tried to mess up the show with his fake laptop charger. This is common knowledge, when you connect a high voltage charger to an electronic gadget, there is always interference with sound. You do not need to study any DJ course at GIMPA to know this. Though the sound engineer detected this problem earlier and informed the DJ to either get a different laptop or laptop charger that has accurate voltage supply, the DJ did not heed to this advice. I think moving forward, Sleeky should sideline DJ Champagne if he refuses to buy a new laptop charger. He messed up the sounds at the last SalaFest and some 3 months down the line, he repeats same mistake.

MCs: Clenzy (self-acclaimed oil city finest MC) and Yoofi Eyeson (presenter at Spice fm and 2017 RTP awards nominee) co-hosted the show. Clenzy as usual chose to remain sexy and calm. Yoofi on the other hand preferred Klints da drunk and DKB personalities on stage. Why Klints da drunk? He chose to make jokes about personalities who were billed to perform and/or grace the occasion with their presence. Take for instance, the comments he made about height of EL and his DJ; Patapaa and his one winter jacket; and finally asking the audience to vote between Lil Win and up-and-coming movie star Atemuda in an Ugly Beauty Contest.

The DKB part about Yoofi's personality on stage was his use of vulgar words on stage. Sorry I cannot repeat them here. It seems dude forgot he was a nominee for the RTP awards. If Nana Konadu was around I am very sure, she would have walked out. But surprisingly, the audience loved what he was doing. So he also gave them more, and they laughed more.

Security: Even though Shatta Wale's die hard fun who gave a spectacular performance claimed there were no policemen at the event, I spotted few police officers at the event grounds alongside official bouncers at the beach. There are speculations the guy who got injured in the pool is a junior officer with the Ghana Police Service. But for the presence of the security men on stage, the headline would have been "ten on admission after Patapaa mounted the stage with One corner".

Low moments:

Time: Show that promised to start at 7pm started at 11pm. I am tired of complaining about late start of events in Takoradi.

Audience: For reasons known only to the audience, the artists from Takoradi did not receive any better response from the crowd. Take for instance, someone like Ras Ebo who in my view performed far far better than EL and Patapaa put together did not get so much cheers from the crowd like the latter. But hey, people paid to be entertained and had the right to choose which artist to cheer to. May be Jesus was right when he said: "a prophet is honoured everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family"

Power outage: EL mounted the stage 3 minutes after 12 midnight, and 39 minutes into his performance, the power at the venue went off. People started appointing accusing fingers at Mahama even though he was not there. Later it was detected the was power outside and same at Allan beach. That was when, it was speculated that the manager at Vienna Beach forgot to buy enough pre-paid credit. The show was interrupted for about 15 minutes. This is not the first time Vienna Beach has done this. Do you remember the Valentine's day show which ended prematurely when their plant failed there was lights out? Vienna Management must sit up and know that they cannot take everyone for granted all the time, may be EL will be humble to return to the stage after power outage but someone like Wizkid, will not tolerate such nonsense.

In related development, one person had his head severely lacerated after he jumped into the swimming pool to dance one corner when Patapaa mounted the stage. The victim Emmanuel Opoku was quickly sent to Takoradi Hospital for medical attention.

It is not clear why the organizers drained water from the swimming pool which was in front of the stage prior to the event knowing very well how crazy the on corner dance can get.

The victim in an interview stated he was rather pushed by an unknown person and blamed the organizers for the injury, since he believes the injury could have been prevented if the swimming pool had enough water. He has since been treated and discharged.

Below are photos of the victim and the accident scene:
