In the run-up to 2016 general elections, Ex-President John Dramani Mahama toured the length and breadth of Ghana to campaign to electorates to retain him for the second term. As a sitting president we all witnessed the long convoy which accompanied him to the nooks and crannies of Ghana.

During a stopover at Asankrangwa in the Western region, a car from his convoy knocked down a 13-year old primary 4 pupil of the Buadum Primary school. The girl who has been identified as Joyce have remained crippled since the gory accident in 2016. Due to her current medical condition she has dropped out of school.

Joyce’s mother who have abandoned her farms narrates that Joyce was staying with a foster mother in Asankrangwa and had been sent by the foster mother to go and sell pure water at the rally grounds when the ex-president arrived in the town. Whiles hawking, she was knocked down by a speeding car which was among the convoy of the Ex-President.

The woman continues that: “When the incident happened it took over 3 days for me to be made known. When I arrived at the Asankrangwa Catholic Hospital where my daughter was admitted, the personnel from the convoy who brought Joyce’s unconscious body had gone back to Accra”

When she was asked whether she had tried to bring the incident to the attention of the former president, she said she does not have an idea where the former president lives. She however admitted local executives of the NDC party have made contacts with them in the past three months, but have not heard from them again.

Joyce unable to stand straight due to her damaged spine
At the moment, Joyce cannot answer the call of nature without support from her mother. At 13, she has to be bathed by her mother, a situation the mother now sees as a burden.

The mother revealed that doctors at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are asking for a fee of 8,000 Ghana cedis to perform series of surgical procedures to restore Joyce back to normal. The medical procedure has delayed for close to 2 years due to her inability to raise such amount.

She is therefore appealing to the former president and all kind hearted people to come to her financial support.

Her only wish is to see her daughter back to her feet and join her mates back to the classroom.
